Hitachi Energy celebrates a century of transformer production in Lodz, Poland

Features | Lodz, Poland | 11.06.2025 | 2 min read

As Hitachi Energy celebrates a century of transformer production in Lodz, Poland, the company is marking this milestone with a significant investment to expand its facility. This expansion aims to ramp up the production of insulation and components for power transformers, addressing the soaring demand for electricity in Poland and across the European Union.

The current energy infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with this demand, further strained by recent geopolitical tensions that have disrupted supply chains and heightened concerns over energy security and accessibility. Hitachi Energy is stepping up to this challenge with bold investments to enhance the supply chain, boost industry capacity, and pioneer innovative technologies.

The Lodz campus, a cutting-edge research and production hub for power and distribution transformers, is set to expand further with the addition of a new 5,000-sq-m. building. This expansion is expected to increase production by 50 percent, reinforcing the global supply chain to meet the rising demand for transformers. The facility will feature state-of-the-art machinery and automated solutions to enhance operational efficiency and ensure the production of top-quality insulation components.

Power transformers are the critical components of electrical grids, always designed and engineered as per customer requirements, and their insulation components require meticulous craftsmanship. With global demand rising rapidly, lead times for these components have significantly increased in recent years. This new investment in our Lodz campus is a crucial step toward accelerating order fulfillment, supporting the transition to a zero-emission future, and creating new jobs in the region.

Scheduled for completion by 2026, this project is part of Hitachi Energy's broader global investment program, which exceeds $6 billion USD. This program aims to expand manufacturing, R&D, engineering, and partnerships across all business units and is expected to create over 100 new jobs in Lodz.

The Lodz campus, a symbol of Hitachi Energy's century-long legacy in transformer manufacturing, exemplifies modern, responsible, and sustainable industrial operations. It includes four production plants and two engineering centers, employing over 2,000 people. Just 18 months ago, it was honored with the Factory of the Future award by the Future Industry Platform Foundation.

Aligned with Hitachi Energy's Sustainability 2030 plan, the campus has achieved a 90 percent reduction in carbon emissions since 2019 by switching to renewable energy sources and implementing energy efficiency measures. It has also achieved zero waste to landfill, reduced water usage by 50 percent since 2019, and established Europe's most advanced transformer insulation fluid treatment facility.

This expansion is part of a production investment plan in Europe. It marks the next step in Hitachi Energy’s initiatives to enable the world’s energy system to be more sustainable, secure, resilient, and affordable.
