The Philippines is trying to rely less on imported fuel and more on the power it generates at home. Two government programs are pushing that shift: the National Renewable Energy Program and the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), which lets large electricity users buy power directly from renewable suppliers instead of the regular grid mix. Together, these programs support a national target of 35% renewable energy by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
That ambition is now taking shape in one of the world’s most significant solar-and-battery storage developments. Designed to combine 3,500 MWp of solar generation with a 4,500 MWh battery energy storage system, the project is set to become one of the world’s largest hybrid solar facilities.
The Challenge
Developing one of the world's largest integrated solar-and-battery facilities required more than installing generation capacity. It required ensuring that vast amounts of renewable energy could be transferred safely, efficiently, and reliably into the national grid.
Integrating gigawatt-scale renewable generation presents significant challenges for grid operators, including maintaining system stability, ensuring reliable power transmission, and supporting the long-term resilience of the electricity network. These challenges are amplified in a project of this scale, spanning across 3,500 hectares, covering six municipalities in the Nueva Ecija and Bulacan regions, and connecting them to the Luzon grid through a 13-km 500-kV transmission network.
To realize the full value of the project, a robust electrical infrastructure was required, with transformers playing a critical role in stepping up and stabilizing the power needed to enable secure grid connection and dependable delivery to homes, businesses, and communities across the Philippines.
The Solution
To support the project's grid connection requirements, Hitachi Energy supplied 10 x 260 MVA power transformers and 14 earthing transformers. Together, these transformers form a critical link between renewable generation and the national grid.
The timely delivery of this critical equipment helped keep the project timeline on schedule. By meeting key project milestones, the on-time delivery of the transformers supported seamless grid integration, helped avoid delays, and enabled the project's successful progression from construction to operation.
The Impact
In July 2026, Phase 1 of the project was successfully energized, bringing 1,373 MW of solar capacity and 825 MW (3,300 MWh) of battery storage online. That made it one of the largest operational integrated solar-and-battery facility on a single site in the world.
Upon full completion in 2027, it is set to deliver enough renewable energy to meet roughly 12% of the Philippines' electricity demand, power approximately 2.4 million homes, and avoid an estimated 4.3 million tons of carbon emissions each year.

It supports energy security, reduces reliance on imported fuel, and helps advance the country’s transition toward a cleaner, more resilient power system.
