R&D Computational Fluid Dynamics Associate Engineer

The opportunity

As R&D Computational Fluid Dynamics Associate Engineer, you will join our Global Multi-Physic Simulation (GLOMUS) network team in the Technology Center of HITACHI-Energy. You will join a team of CFD analysts as part of a wider group of key people with specific expertise in the fields of electrical, structural, acoustic, thermo-mechanic and fluid-dynamics analyses, simulation and testing. As part of our global R&D community including Technology Centers and Research Centers worldwide, you will contribute to support all factories in the PG Dry, Traction and Distribution Transformers on innovative and challenging research projects.

How you’ll make an impact

  • You will be responsible for creating and improving analytical tools and finite element analysis (FEA) automations for thermo-fluid dynamic analysis in electrical machines such as transformers and reactors
  • Propose and provide technical solutions for a variety of electrical machines, ensuring that they meet the required standards and performance expectations
  • Actively participate in the creation, updating, and maintenance of technical standards that dictate the management of thermo-mechanical performance of various transformers, including dry, liquid-filled, and traction distribution transformers
  • Work within the GLOMUS network, collaborating with other simulation teams to deliver comprehensive multi-physic finite element methodologies and automations for coupled electromagnetic, structural, and fluid-dynamic problems
  • Design and conduct experimental campaigns to validate the technical solutions and numerical models you or the team propose
  • Provide timely and effective support to factories facing technical challenges and facilitate the transfer of technology and knowledge from R&D to the engineering department through the creation of design rules, training materials, and collaboration with design tools teams
  • Carry out CFD simulations for cooling systems in all types of transformers, run feasibility studies, develop new technical concepts, design new products, and simulate their expected performances to contribute to technology development projects

What we’re looking for

  • A PhD or MSc in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics
  • Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Thermo-Mechanic Simulations
  • Advanced knowledge in numerical methods for thermodynamic simulations and experience with software like ANSYS CFX/FLUENT, OpenFOAM, and StarCCM+ are specific skills that are directly applicable to the job tasks
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Matlab, Visual Basic, and Python is important for creating custom simulations and analyzing data
  • Understanding of Fluid-Structure Interaction Theory
  • Excellent communication skills and team spirit, along with an innovative spirit and "out of the box" thinking, are key for collaborative environments and innovation within the team
  • Willingness to travel and fluency in English are practical requirements for the job that enable collaboration in diverse environments and effective communication in the international arena
