NSD670 packet-based teleprotection for modern grids

Overview

NSD670 is a packet-native and hybrid teleprotection solution designed to help utilities modernize protection communications while maintaining the speed, dependability, and security required for critical grid operations. 

Built on field-proven mission-critical communication expertise, it enables the secure transmission of distance protection signals over Ethernet technology and packet-switched wide area networks. 

Its modular design, application-aware supervision, and advanced diagnostics support line distance protection applications, while the Web HMI remote interface, redundant hardware, and strong cybersecurity features help simplify operation, maintenance, and long-term network evolution.

Architecture

As electrical grids expand and become more complex, so do the demands on the protective devices and systems that must protect them and preserve system stability.

Protection equipment, together with communication links, enables fast and selective fault isolation on high-voltage transmission lines, transformers, reactors, and other critical electrical plant assets. By enabling faulty parts to be selectively disconnected and transferring commands in the shortest possible time, teleprotection systems help prevent failure and equipment damage.

Built on Hitachi Energy’s expertise with teleprotection, NSD670 is designed for fast, dependable, and secure operation of line distance protection applications over optical fiber, Ethernet/IP, MPLS-TP, IP/MPLS and layer 1 communication media.
