Hitachi Energy launches Compact Line Voltage Regulator to address the controllability of distribution grids

Features | 17.06.2025 | 2 min read

Presented at CIRED 2025, this new transformer-integrated solution provides efficient and active voltage control for distribution utilities and industries.

Hitachi Energy introduced its latest innovation for distribution grids, the Compact Line Voltage Regulator (C-LVR), during a launch ceremony at CIRED 2025, the leading international conference on electricity distribution.

The compact line voltage regulator is an integrated solution that combines voltage regulation and power transformation within a single, compact product designed for modern distribution grids. Embedded directly into the same footprint as a standard distribution transformer, it enables active voltage control at the feeder level without requiring additional space or infrastructure changes.

Electricity distribution systems today are evolving to support decarbonization and decentralization. They are subject to new operating conditions, shifting away from legacy unidirectional power flows coming from large, centralized generation to reverse power flows and increasingly volatile loads.

Distribution grids are pivotal to the future of clean, electrified energy systems. They must be equipped to maintain grid stability amid the growing integration of distributed energy resources, the rise of electric mobility, and the ongoing electrification of industries.

"This transformation calls for significant grid modernization and scaling, evolving from traditional power distribution to intelligent energy management. Our Compact Line Voltage Regulator complements our comprehensive portfolio, enabling smarter, more resilient distribution grids.”

The compact line voltage regulator empowers distribution utilities and industries to deliver voltage stability and performance where it matters most – at the edge of the grid – in a familiar, compact, and easy-to-deploy format.

It combines the function of a traditional distribution transformer with impactful LVR regulation into one single product. Prepared to compensate for voltage fluctuations automatically, it ensures stable voltage levels without the need for extensive grid expansions. This makes it suitable for new network designs and retrofit projects without requiring additional components, space, or redesigns. It is also SCADA-compatible and ready for installation in standard compact secondary substations (CSS) and digital grid environments.

It completes Hitachi Energy’s full range of voltage distribution solutions to actively control distribution grids by automatically adjusting the voltage within a certain range to a desired value. The portfolio spans from distribution transformers with tap changer capabilities at individual nodes of the grid, the compact LVR at the feeder level, to the traditional power line voltage regulator at the head of the line.
